It’s no secret that eyelashes are a big deal right now. Gone are the days of clumpy, hard-to-remove mascara and lashes that look like spider’s legs. We no longer have to rely on makeup to enhance our eyes, now that we have eyelash extensions and lash lifts!
But how do you know which option is right for you?
Originating from South Korea in the very early 2000s, eyelash extensions involve applying individual lash fibres to individual natural lashes using a very strong adhesive. They are applied either as single fibres or as a fan of super-light extensions to give the illusion of bigger eyes and to create fuller, longer lashes.
Due to the intricate work and the high level of skill required to apply eyelash extensions, it can take anywhere from one to three hours to have a full set applied. Extensions require regular maintenance in the form of cleansing and refills to keep them looking their best, as lashes shed and new lashes grow. Lash lifting began in the early 2000s, starting out as a lash ‘perm’, which used the same technology that was developed for hairdressers to perm hair.
Lash perms used small cylindrical rods, over which the natural lashes were set using perm solutions in order to create a curl. Lash lifts these days use a dome-shaped shield rather than a rod, which is placed right at the base of the eyelashes and adhered to the eyelid. The natural lashes are then glued to this shield, and the solutions are applied to break down the disulphide bonds in the hair to redirect them into this position. This results in the natural lashes being lifted upward, creating the illusion of longer, fuller lashes.
Different-sized shields can be used to create a higher or softer lift, and for natural eyelashes of varying lengths. As part of the treatment, an eyelash tint is usually applied, which helps the natural lashes to look darker and makes the overall look more impactful.
There are a number of lash lift brands available on the market, but at Brisbane Lashes Salon we choose to use the Elleebana system due to its safe and innovative formula, consistent results and quick processing time.
Lash lifts are a great alternative to eyelash extensions for clients who are unable commit to the required 2-3 weekly refills, as lifts can last for up to 12 weeks. To refresh the look, the lashes will usually need to be lifted again after 8 weeks, as old lashes will have shed and new lashes grown.
Many clients who are allergic to eyelash extension adhesive are still able to have their lashes lifted.
